Rosebud is on fire! (Cheryl Cameron: Frankie Photography)

By Stephanie Smarrelli

Expecting a close match, Rosebud toppled last season’s premiers with a massive 22-goal victory against Edi-Asp. The Buds stormed ahead early with a six-goal lead in the first quarter. In the second they kept the Eagles to only six goals, while they pushed their lead out to 15. Rosebud continued to hurt the Eagles on the scoreboard in the third term, with another 14 goals while the Eagles struggle to find momentum. Heading into the final quarter, the Buds doubled Edi-Asp. It was a much more even final quarter, however, with the Eagles scoring eight to the Buds seven goals.  The damage was already cemented in place by the final 15 minutes with Rosebud taking an enormous win to put them second on the ladder. Rosebud’s Nicole Hadgkiss was the recipient of the ANZAC Spirit Award.

A battle between the two Frankston teams saw Frankston YCW defeat Frankston Bombers by 16 goals. Bombers were able to control YCW's in patches but the class of the Stonekittens was too much in the end. The ANZAC Spirit Award went to Frankston YCW’s Lauren Briggs.

The closest match of the round went to Sorrento and Dromana with the Sharks taking a four-goal victory.  Dromana had the lead in the first quarter, however, from that point onwards Sorrento had control. Only one goal separated the two teams at halftime with Dromana threatening to turn over the ball and steal the lead. The Sharks fought hard, keeping themselves two goals in front at the final break. Dromana were hot on the heels of the Sharks in the fourth quarter, however, they fell short. The ANZAC Spirit Award was given to Sorrento’s Maddi Gerloff.

Mornington find themselves sitting on top of the ladder after blowing Mt Eliza away with a 52-goal win. Tessa Haddock of Mornington was awarded the ANZAC Spirit Award for the match. A strong performance saw The Pines 16-goal winners over Bonbeach as well on the weekend.
