Around the Courts: Division 2 Round 8

By Stephanie Smarrelli

After losing to Crib Point by 15 goals last week, Langwarrin bounced back upsetting second placed Hastings with a sixteen-goal win. The Blues held a four-goal lead early, however, the Kangaroos were able to trim the margin down to three goals in the second. Making the most of their opportunities in the third quarter, Langwarrin jumped ahead of the Blues with an impressive 19-goals to eight. Holding onto their four-goal lead in the final quarter, Langwarrin scored a couple more goals to finish the match strongly.

Last year’s grand finalists Karingal and Crib Point went head to head over the weekend. Karingal came out on top once again with a nine-goal win. The Bulls were composed throughout the match with strong performances in the midcourt from Bridgette Barry-Murphy and Chloe Collyer while Mardi Cunningham and Milly Haugen held up the defence end. Crib Point’s Adrienne Harris was strong for the Magpies in goal defence, however, the ladder leaders were unable to upset the reigning premiers.

Pearcedale are still yet to win a match this season with Tyabb defeating them by a massive 54 goals on the weekend.

Playing at home, Somerville had a strong 12-goal win against Rye. Somerville went 7 from 7 across all grades and codes against the Demons.

Seaford were too good for Devon Meadows defeating the Panthers by 39 goals. A commanding start from the Tigers saw them establish an eight-goal lead, which they then tripled in the second quarter. Making the most of every opportunity, Seaford converted goal after goal while the Devon Meadows struggled to catch up despite consistent efforts across the final two quarters.

A close first half from a seventh-placed Chelsea and an eighth-placed Red Hill blew out in the second half in favour of the Seagulls who finished the match 10 goals ahead of their opponents.
